چکیده
A model is presented that explains the charging rate of LISA Pathfinder test masses by interplanetary cosmic ray environment. The incorporates particle-tracking from TeV to eV energies using a combination GEANT4 and custom low-energy particle generation tracking code. electrostatic environment mass simulated allowing for comparison test-mass charging-rate dependence on local electric fields with observations made in orbit. able reproduce observed behavior good accuracy gold surface properties compatible literature values. results confirm significant fraction net current caused population ($\sim$eV) electrons produced electron- ion-induced kinetic emission surrounding metal surfaces. Assuming work function 4.2 eV, unbalanced flow these unbiased contributes $\sim$10% overall rate. Their contribution charging-current shot noise disproportionately higher it adds $\sim$40% predicted noise. However, even this increased still only 40% measured in-orbit, remains an unsolved issue.

Charge-Induced Force Noise on Free-Falling Test Masses: Results from LISA Pathfinder.
We report on electrostatic measurements made on board the European Space Agency mission LISA Pathfinder. Detailed measurements of the charge-induced electrostatic forces exerted on free-falling test masses (TMs) inside the capacitive gravitational reference sensor are the first made in a relevant environment for a space-based gravitational wave detector. Employing a combination of charge contro...
متن کاملBeyond the Required LISA Free-Fall Performance: New LISA Pathfinder Results down to 20 μHz.
In the months since the publication of the first results, the noise performance of LISA Pathfinder has improved because of reduced Brownian noise due to the continued decrease in pressure around the test masses, from a better correction of noninertial effects, and from a better calibration of the electrostatic force actuation. In addition, the availability of numerous long noise measurement run...
متن کاملFree-flight experiments in LISA Pathfinder
The LISA Pathfinder mission will demonstrate the technology of drag-free test masses for use as inertial references in future space-based gravitational wave detectors. To accomplish this, the Pathfinder spacecraft will perform drag-free flight about a test mass while measuring the acceleration of this primary test mass relative to a second reference test mass. Because the reference test mass is...
متن کاملDetailed Calculation of Test - Mass Charging in the LISA Mission
The electrostatic charging of the LISA test masses due to exposure of the spacecraft to energetic particles in the space environment has implications in the design and operation of the gravitational inertial sensors and can affect the quality of the science data. Robust predictions of charging rates and associated stochastic fluctuations are therefore required for the exposure scenarios expecte...
متن کاملThe LISA Pathfinder mission
In this paper, we describe the current status of the LISA Pathfinder mission, a precursor mission aimed at demonstrating key technologies for future spacebased gravitational wave detectors, like LISA. Since much of the flight hardware has already been constructed and tested, we will show that performance measurements and analysis of these flight components lead to an expected performance of the...
